{"id":670,"date":"2021-11-30T09:19:07","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T21:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jonesnz.com\/?p=670"},"modified":"2021-11-30T09:19:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T21:19:07","slug":"from-punched-cards-to-elearning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jonesnz.com\/index.php\/2021\/11\/30\/from-punched-cards-to-elearning\/","title":{"rendered":"From Punched Cards to eLearning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This post is edited from a piece submitted\nfor a course on the internet, probably Coursera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My educational background was maths and\nscience-based and at school I developed a fascination with Physical Geography\nand later Geology.&nbsp; When I graduated in\n1974 computers were, generally speaking, room-sized units or at least\nwardrobe-sized units although some mini-computers were certainly beginning to\nappear by then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early brushes with computing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my mid 20\u2019s I worked as a geophysicist\non marine seismic surveys using some of the earliest \u201cportable\u201d computers then\navailable, the DEC PDP-8 [1], this was used for real-time navigational\ncalculations based on early implementations of the satnav system (which was\npretty crude at the time with accuracies from 50 to 1500 metres depending on\ngetting the right satellites in view for tri-angulating positions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next few years, such is the pace\nof change, these refrigerator sized 12-bit machines with teletypes for\ninput\/output were steadily replaced by desktop sized units with more power and\nactual screens and keyboards.&nbsp; The HP\n98xx series, for example, featured a nice red 256 character one-line\ndisplay.&nbsp; Later they graduated to green\nscreens, in-built printers and digital tape storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1976 I quit this work and went back to\ncollege at University College London.&nbsp; At\nthat time they had a requirement that all post-grad students had to do an\nintroductory 2-week course on programming in FORTRAN IV.&nbsp; Having taught myself a bit of BASIC on those\nHP machines I was up for the challenge and wrote my first program on punched\ncards.&nbsp; It printed a graph of a profile\nof the magnetic field over an undersea structure we surveyed in the English\nChannel and took a week or so to debug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My next serious encounter with computers\nwas in 1982 when I moved with my family to Portugal to take up geophysical\nconsulting there and the company had bought a DEC VAX II machine to which I\ncould connect via a terminal.&nbsp; At this\ntime I also purchased my first home computer, a BBC Micro 8-bit machine, which\ncost over GBP 1000 and even more expensive twin 800Kb floppy disk drives \u2013\nstate of the art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently I worked at an engineering\nlaboratory and developed software on Zilog and VAX VMS machines \u2013 including\nconnecting to a VAX VMS using Windows 2.5.&nbsp;\nMostly we didn\u2019t bother, it was really clunky back in 1988 and played a\npretty lousy game of Othello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Computers and Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1989 I joined the local school to help\nthem introduce computing across the board, they were already running Pascal\nprogramming.&nbsp; We had access to a lab of\nAmstrad 8256 [2] word processors running CP\/M as the operating system.&nbsp; The code had to be written in the Word\nProcessor, saved to tape, then the Pascal Compiler loaded to compile the\nprogram to a CP\/M executable.&nbsp; This\ntedious chore made our students very good at desk-checking code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later we graduated to Amstrad 1512\u2019s [3]\nwith twin floppy disk drives and running MS-DOS and GEM an early graphical user\ninterface.&nbsp; I vividly remember looking at\na 20 Mb (yes, not a typo) hard-drive with my colleague and wondering how on\nearth we would ever use all that space.&nbsp;\nOf course, all our documents then were in WordPerfect with the only\ndiagrams made up of the character line shapes.&nbsp;\nI still have the 125-page manual we wrote (in WordPerfect) for our\nteacher training workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was with these machines that we first\nconnected to the outside world using the CIS (Compuserve Information\nService).&nbsp; This was the company that\nbrought you the RLE [4] and GIF image standards, for better or for worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compuserve was a \u201cwalled garden\u201d with email service and access to many different support forums for its own services and services offered by other companies.\u00a0 If memory serves, we could also access Gopher (text-based tool) that permitted searching internet connected servers and examine their public contents.\u00a0 This was how much of my early educational research was carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> A Gopher screen looks something like this [5] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"435\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/jonesnz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/gopher.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jonesnz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/gopher.png 435w, https:\/\/jonesnz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/gopher-300x158.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To give a flavour of these times, it was\nalready being recognised that the internet was a big treasure trove (albeit\nmainly text-based):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&nbsp;\u201cBut now that\nthe Net has become a rich repository of information, people are looking at ways\nto make it far easier to find all that data.
